Heard Museum
One of the establishments in the United States that may be considered as world class is the Heard Museum Phoenix founded in Arizona during the 1920's. It holds high quality art collections and is also a fine resource for information about the culture and heritage of the Native people from the Southwest. People will find the site both a place for recreation and an avenue for education.
Researchers, professors, and students on travel to Phoenix Arizona alike will love hunting around in the Jane Baguley Library and Archives, a very popular part of the Heard Museum Phoenix that is home to wide-ranging facts that give deeper understanding of the way of life and artistic expressions of the Natives. Items that are exhibited include jewelry, cultural articles, textile, baskets, sculpture, and the likes.
There are a number of shows that draw a lot of visitors. An example is: The Sole Stories, which usually catches the interest of shoe lovers and manufacturers because it focuses on the history of footwear of American Indians.
Every Picture Tells a Story, is something for families because it is interactive and definitely for all ages as it delves into the meaning of the symbols or patterns you commonly find in artworks. Life in a Cold Place is also another show that speaks of art, specifically the so called Arctic Art, a collection of drawings, carvings, etc. that illustrates how Inuit artists have lived in the Arctic.
For those who dream of traveling, the display entitled Around the World is highly recommended. It gives a glimpse of Native art that have been put together for the period of over seventy five years not only in the Southwest, but also in other parts of the world, giving one a feel of the wonderful world of exploration and discovery.
The Heard Museum Phoenix is open daily from 9:30 am until 5:00 pm, and is closed during Christmas, Thanksgiving, New Year's Day, Independence Day, etc. Admission prices are affordable, for as low as $9 for senior citizens, $10 for adults, $3 for kids aged 6-12, and $5 for students. Children below 6 years of age, members/employees, and American Indians, can get in for free.
