Mystery Castle
One of the so called: Points of Pride, Mystery Castle Phoenix, constructed in the 1930's and completed in 1945, can be found in South Mountain Park. Boyce Luther Gulley, inspired by the love for his daughter, Mary Lou Gulley, is the creator of this specific tourist spot, made out of inexpensive, but indigenous and artistic materials.
What is amazing about the Mystery Castle Phoenix is the fact that it has been kept a secret until after Boyce's death, wherein his wife and daughter were informed by an attorney about the house Boyce built for fifteen years for his kid, who, he had to leave because of his tuberculosis. Mary Lou and her mother, of course, moved in and started allowing tours to give people the chance of taking a peak into their special home.
Most of the guests on Phoenix AZ travel cannot help but marvel at the three story edifice, built with eighteen rooms and more than ten fireplaces. It is composed of a wide variety of materials like adobe, stone, and even unusual objects like automobile pieces, telephone poles, etc.
The said spot also has a chapel, a 'cantina,' and even a dungeon. It is held together not only by cement and mortar, but also of goat milk and calcium, which makes the place unique. Some parts, up to now, are still works in progress because they still have not been completed.
Another interesting observation about the building is that some artifacts were also used in making the structure what it is today. For example, real petroglyphs are even found embedded in one wall. Bricks that are handmade are also seen in the handrail in the house. Valuable furniture like Frank Lloyd Wright's pieces as well as John Wayne products are also displayed in the said site.
There was a period of time when marriage ceremonies even took place in Mystery Castle Phoenix because of its elaborate wedding altar. Today, however, it can be used only for tours that come with a $5 fee for maintenance purposes. In the past, Mary Lou Gulley herself even headed the tour of the property. Nowadays, though, she is too weak to engage in it, but people can still catch sight of her in some days.
Mystery Castle Phoenix may be visited from October to June every Thursdays-Sundays at around 11:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. With its creative formation, guests are given the feel of old Arizona and are entertained as well.
