Originally used for Vaudeville acts, the Orpheum Theatre is small with a capacity of 1364 seats. Its construction of between 1927 and 1929 costs $750,000, designed by architect Lescher & Mahoney. Its overall style is Spanish Baroque. It was purchased in 1940s by Paramount Pictures chain and renamed the Paramount. It was further sold to Netherlander in 1960 then to the City of Phoenix in 1984 that did a $14 million restoration and reopened in 1997. It is currently home to Phoenix Metropolitan Opera.

The theater is currently the only theater in Phoenix designated historic in the entire Valley. In the year 1988, the Phoenix City Citizens Bond election authorized a total of $7 million for this theaters restoration. This amount was backed by Phoenix Civic Plaza Building Corporation, which offered additional funding. The theater was incorporated a non-profit organization in the year 1989 so as to raise private sector funds geared at supplementing public funding for a complete restoration. It was reopened after restoration on January 28, 1997.
